The Bengal Renaissance was a 19th century cultural, social, intellectual, and artistic movement that gave birth to India's independence movement.

Our renaissance fundamentally transformed Indian society, the nature of progress, anti-colonial politics, and sought new questions for aesthetic and philosophical enquiries.

Chittoprasad documented the 1943 Bengal Famine that killed an estimated 3 million people within eight months. His stark linocuts and lithographs critiqued colonial policies that led to widespread famine.

Beyond the human toll, the famine left a quieter wound: the degradation of Bengal's soil. Exhaustion of organic matter and nutrient collapse reduced agricultural productivity for decades after.

The famine remains a stark reminder: when soil fails, societies fail.

The Bengal Renaissance Project seeks to restore hope to the land. If the cultural Renaissance awakened the mind, we aim to awaken the soil.
